Chords, Guitar Tablature & Lyrics

I think that there are two electric rhythm guitars with electric lead solos in this jewel (I could swear though - at times I hear three simultaneous guitar parts on the recording - the Ozark boys may have dubbed a little - or ?). I'm going to show you just the main rhythm part which can be played on either an acoustic or electric guitar. Be sure to visit my tab page in order to understand how I write tablature on the web.

THE RIFF:

The seven note riff that is played twice in the song is as follows:

3/5, 3/3, 4/5, 4/1, 4/3, 4/1, 5/3

And play the 4th, & 5th notes a little more quickly than the other notes!

TIPS:

As you probably noticed, the C chord is shown two different ways: C (slap) & C(w/6).
Here is what they mean:

C (slap)

1 -|| ---------------------------------
2 -|| ---------------------------------
3 -|| ---------------------------------
4 -|| --------------------------3------5
5 -|| ----------------1----------------3
6 -|| ---------------------------------

Yep, it means just to play those two notes: slap down on the stings with your pickin' hand - quickly pluck the 4th & 5th strings with your thumb (or pick) while quickly bouncing your pickin' hand off the strings. Keep on repeating.... you want to hear the notes on the 'up' beat and the 'slap' on the downbeat. Keep the two fingers pressed on the fretboard and let your pickin' hand do a natural muting effect as it bounces in rhythm. This is an old electric guitar 'hard-rock' trick - pounding on the root and the fifth with the overdrive a drivin'.

C(w/6)

1 -|| -------------------------------------------
2 -|| -------------------------------------------
3 -|| -------------------------------------------
4 -|| --------------------------3---------------5----X-----7
5 -|| ----------------1-------------------------3
6 -|| -------------------------------------------

Play this part without the slap - and on the 2nd and 4th beats, use your pinkie to play the "X" note on the 7th fret (I write the - (w/6) thing because the "X" - actually an "A" note - is the "sixth" of the C chord). Quickly press and release the note on the 2nd and 4th beats.

Or you can play the chord this way...

C(w/6)

1 -|| ----------------1---------------------3
2 -|| ----------------1---------3-----------5
3 -|| ----------------1---------3-----------5
4 -|| ----------------1---------3-----------5---------X-----7
5 -|| ----------------1---------------------3
6 -|| ----------------1---------------------3

Play the X on the 2nd and 4th beats with your pinkie on the 7th fret, but strum just the lower three strings.

_______________________________

While we are on the subject, the F(w/6) chord in the harp solo does something similar:

F(w/6)

1 -|| --------------------------------
2 -|| --------------------------------
3 -|| --------------------------------
4 -|| --------------------------------
5 -|| -------------3-----------------3---------X-----5
6 -|| ---1---------------------------1

Play this just like the C(w/6) (I write the - w/6 thing because the "X" - actually a "D" note - is the "sixth" of the F chord).

Or if you have strong enough hands, you can play it this way...

F(w/6)

1 -|| ---1---------------------------1
2 -|| ---1---------------------------1
3 -|| ---1-----2---------------------2
4 -|| ---1---------------------------1
5 -|| ---1---------3-----------------3--------X-----5
6 -|| ---1---------------------------1

Play the X on the 2nd and 4th beats with your pinkie on the 5th fret, but strum just the lower two or three strings.

In fact, no matter what chord positions you use in the song, concentrate you strumming on the lower strings (the bottom two or three strings of that particular chord) for all the chords pretty much throughout. This is what the Ozarks did on the recording.

The key to playing this song is using the proper C chord - the C (slap) and the C(w/6) thing. It wouldn't hurt to use the F(w/6) at the proper time, either.
