I think that there are two acoustic guitars and one National Steel in this one. I'm going to show you the chords, some tab, and a tip or two - you can take it from there. Be sure to visit my tab page in order to understand how I write tablature on the web.

Click here if you want only the lyrics.

TIPS

This song is in 'dropped D' tuning - tune just the 6th string down one full step to a D - it should sound like the 4th string but an octave lower. The terms 'D(lick)' and 'fed' are defined below.

All of Song

All of the chord symbols represent 2 beats, except:
D(lick), which receives 8 beats, & the one D4 - that whole line gets 4 beats (it's where the singer says 'lower').

D(lick) for one guitar:

If you are playing alone or finger pickin', then play the chords and bass using this lick.

Play the following one time for each time you see D(lick), it takes 8 beats to play it. The 'fed' represents the last three single notes.

         D                    C(add9)  G/A fed
1 -|| -------------------------------------------
2 -|| -----3-------3------3------3------3--------
3 -|| -----2-------2-------------0------0--------
4 -|| ---0---3p--0--------0----------------------
5 -|| -----------------0h3-----2h3---2--0--------
6 -|| -------------------------------------3h2-0-

The '3p' means to pull that note, the 'h' mean to hammer. Anytime you play the open 6th string - let it ring long and loud. To play this, place your fingers in a D chord position and use the 2nd finger for pulling 3p and for the 0h3. The high notes are no big deal - at least play the bass line and add what notes you can/want on top.

D(lick) for more than one guitar:

If there is more than one guitar playing this (like the recording), one can play the bass and the other can play chords.

The person playing bass can play the following one time for each time you see D(lick), it takes 8 beats to play it:

         D                    C(add9)  G/A fed
1 -|| -------------------------------------------
2 -|| -------------------------------------------
3 -|| -------------------------------------------
4 -|| ---0---3p--0--------0----------------------
5 -|| -----------------0h3-----2h3---2--0--------
6 -|| -------------------------------------3h2-0-

The '3p' means to pull that note, the 'h' mean to hammer. Anytime you play the open 6th string - let it ring long and loud.

The person playing chords can play the following one time for each time you see D(lick), it takes 8 beats to play it:

         D                    C(add9)  G/A fed
1 -|| ---2---------------------------------------
2 -|| ---3----------------------3------3---------
3 -|| ---2----------------------0------0---------
4 -|| ---0----------------------2------0---------
5 -|| --------------------------3------0---------
6 -|| -------------------------------------3h2-0-

Verses

Play the following for the verses. Don't forget to hammer - it's pretty important.

            D       C(add9)     C(add9)      G/B      fed
1 -|| ------2----------3-----------3----------3--------------
2 -|| ------3----------3-----------3----------3--------------
3 -|| ------2----------0-----------0----------0--------------
4 -|| ------0----------2-----------2----------0--------------
5 -|| -----------------3-------0h3-3------0h2-2--------------
6 -|| ------------------------------------------------3h2-0--

National Steel Ending Lick (sounds best with a slide - and a National Steel!)

1 -|| --------------------------------------------------------
2 -|| --10------8-7-----8-7--------------------------------
3 -|| ---------------7-------5-7----------------------------
4 -|| --------------------------------3-2-0-----------------
5 -|| ---------------------------------------3-2-0---------
6 -|| -----------------------------------------------3-2-0--
